this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, june 27th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, supporters of same-sex marriage say they have more work to do, but this morning they're celebrating two landmark supreme court decisions. in one the court ruled legally married same-sex couples are entitled to the same federal benefits as straight couples. another court ruling paved the way for resumption of same-sex marriages in california. jan crawford begins our coverage. >> fighting for the wars says the 1996 marriage defensive act that denied federal benefits to legally married same-sex couple had one purpose, one effect, to impose a disadvantage, a separate status and so a stigma to those made it lawful by the unquestioned authority of the states. it tells those couples and all the world that they're otherwise valid marriages are unworthy of federal recognition.

that distinction, the court said, violates constitutional garon tees of liberty, equality, and equal dignity. in dissent, chief justice roberts said it does not mean state laws banning same-sex marriage are unconstitutional, but in the same dissent justins anton and scalia said it will reach that point some day. they say it's just a matter of listening and waiting for the other shoe. the second same-sex marriage case focused on california's proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in 2008 after the same supreme court had legalized it. supporters of same-sex marriage argued proposition 8 ban was unconstitutional and federal courts in california agreed. instead the court said it lacked the jurisdiction to defy the case, a technical ruling that sent the issue back to california.

it means the lower federal court ruling striking down proposition 8 will remain in place. as for results, in the near future, same-sex marriages in california could resume. this decision unlike that first landmark rule willing have no impact nationwide because the court did not decide the bigger issues. jan crawford, cbs news, the supreme court. well, yesterday's court decisions triggered celebration among same-sex marriage supporters from new york to california. tara mergener is in washington with more. tara, good morning. >> good morning to you, anne-marie. well, this is no question, this is a major milestone for supporters of same-sex marriage, but the fight is hardly over with conservatives among those condemning the high court's rulings. the party lasted well into the night in san francisco's castro district. partiers filled the streets celebrating the supreme court rulings which are seen as victories in the fight for same-sex marriage in america.

edy windsor, the plaintiff in one of the cases, was the star of one of the parties at new york's famous stonewall inn. tomorrow is the 44th anniversary of the riots at the greenwich village bar where the gay rights movement started. >> while we celebrate how far we've come, we know it's not the end of our justice struggle but the beginning of a new chapter. >> within hours of the ruling two democratic lawmakers introduced legislation to repeal the rest of the defense marriage act the supreme court did not rule on. >> section 2 was not before the court. >> seth section 2 was not before the court. >> section 2 bars states from recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states. >> we still need to white doma in its entirety off the books. >> but some on the right are promising to fight the legislature. >> the state of kansas will be able to amendment its law.

>> 38 states do not currently recognize same-sex marriage. and while disappointed in the doma ruling, the president of the family research council also expressed relief saying, quote, the court did not impose the sweeping redefinition of natural marriage that was sought. anne-marie? >> tara mergener in washington, thank you, tara. well, the same-sex marriage rulings came ten years to the day after a supreme court ruling that struck down anti-sodomy laws. in his dissent in that case, justice anthony scalia said that it would lead to same-sex marriage. now president obama is in senegal this morning, the first stop on a three-nation tour in after ka. he'll meet with the president, visit the supreme court and tour goree island. it's believed millions of africans were shipped into slavery from there, but the president's planned could be altered depending on the condition of nelson mandela.

nelson remains in grave condition on life support. debora patta is in pretoria just outside the hospital where mandela is being treated. debora, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. cbs news sources tell us that some of nelson mandela's family members have been summoned urgently to his pretoria hospital this morning. they say that he has been told -- they've been told to get here quickly. last night president jacob zuma of south africa visited nelson mandela in hospital. he then issued a formal statement saying the president remains in critical condition and the doctors are doing all they can to keep him comfortable. the president then canceled a planned trip to neighboring country mozambique. there is anxious waiting outside the pretorial hospital this morning where nelson mandela is on life support. he has been here for 20 days now. a steady stream of well-wishers continue to gather here, and they're offering prayers and messages of support.

no one will hand him over. he leaked information about phone and internet operations. chuck hagel called it a serious breach. ecuador thinks it would offer him asylum. well, today jurors in the george zimmerman murder trial will hear more testimony from the last person to speak with trayvon martin. she testified yesterday that she heard martin scream before his phone went dead, moments before he was fatally shot. >> reporter: rachel jeantel testified she spoke with martin on the phone moments before george zimmerman had killed him. martin had been buying snacks at a local convenience store and the two friends talked before he returned to his father's home. jeantel said he told her a man was following him and heard a voice saying what you doing around here. she claims she then heard a scuffle. >> i kind of heard trayvon

saying get off, get off. seconds later the phone went dead. during cross-examination defense attorney don west attacked her credibility. >> you're the last person to have spoke within trayvon martin. >> yes. >> but you did not report it to law enforcement. >> i thought they're supposed to call you. >> reporter: jeantel became upset when he questioned the consistency of her testimony. >> i had told you -- are you listening? >> neighbors only heard or saw parts of the scuffle between the two men. police say no one witnessed entirely what happened that night. neighbor jane surdyka said she heard a scream outside her window. that scream was caught on the 911 call. >> i really felt it was the boy's voice. >> another said she saw zimmerman on top of martin, but the defense claims it was the teenager who attacked zimmerman

patriots tight end aaron hernandez was charged in court for fatally shooting oden lloyd. he was arrested from his home with his hand behind his back. lloyd was found in a field. investigators quickly zeroed in on hernandez, searching his house several times. on monday they even donned wet suits and waded into a swampy area just a block from his home. lloyd was a 27-year-old semipro foot player. his family says he was dating the sister of hernandez's fiancee, and the two men were together in terrell morning hours on the day lloyd was killed. the patriots quickly distanced themselves from hernandez, releasing the player they signed to a five-year 40-million contract last summer. marley hall for cbs news.
